Shaylee wanted to be cozy:
Today is the first day of school in our home, yay! The kids are so excited. I am writing this as we are working, one of the benefits of having a laptop :)
They started out with math. Shaylee did the first 10 pages in Primer. Ethan did the first two tests from Alpha. I think refreshing it is good since he forgot at first how it worked. They played with the math-u-see blocks for a little while.
Doing their math:
Then the kids did Phonics Activity 1. They spread out the picture cards and matched them with the letter cards. I want to go through the various phonics cards before I start Ethan with the higher ones just to familiarize him with them again, even though he is an excellent phonetic reader.
Then they did a few lines of copywork and drew pictures to go along with it.
Finally, they painted suncatchers before I let them go for now. Ethan is playing on the computer and Shaylee is watching TV.
Through the day we will do some reading and we may go to the library later. I don't want to do a lot of sitdown work all at once. Through their play and games they learn a lot too.
Books read today (updated through the day and if the kids let me know what they've read):

are you really liking the math u see?
i debated and debated.. and decided to wait until Jan to buy a math curriculum...
:)
what should i know before i get it?
Well, the kids really like it but it is blocks! Blocks+kids= fun :)
I think it's great. The teacher pack is helpful in explaining although I didn't get it for the Alpha. I'm starting to think I may want to get it for Beta. The best thing about it is you can get the kids to watch the DVD and then they do it, so it's like having a teacher in your home (and Steve Demme is pretty cool) and it explains it well. We're basically just working out of the book without help because we're lazy like that. I'm also reusing the books by getting them to use pencil and erasing it because it does get expensive.
It is a lot different from any math I've ever seen before but it is effective. Lots of people love it. I love that my kids love it :)
